Master Plan brings Tallangatta Foreshore to Life

23 July 2020

Sustainable Park Solutions recently completed a master plan for the Tallangatta Foreshore in North East Victoria. The project was designed to create a vibrant destination for community and visitor’s that compliments Tallangatta’s unique character and healthy culture whilst providing opportunities to support and strengthen the local economy.

Tallangatta conceptThe landscape intent of the plan was “Creating a vibrant destination for community and visitor’s that compliments Tallangatta’s unique character and healthy culture whilst providing opportunities to support and strengthen the local economy.”

The master plan was delivered in a restricted time frame and included a detailed site analysis, project vision, review of key design drivers including amenity, tourism and experience.

Amenity

The design will facilitate many opportunities to upgrade and add to the existing amenity within Tallangatta and particularly along the foreshore. These opportunities include:

  • Improving the foreshore experience;
  • Providing movements for a variety of activities to occur along/on the lake;
  • Upgrading and adding to the existing bicycle network;
  • Improving accessibility to the lake and within Pelican Park;
  • Strengthening the connection to water and reinforcing the lake’s presence;
  • Spaces for large and intimate community events;
  • Drawing upon the natural surroundings to deliver a sought-after destination; and
  • Promoting a healthy lifestyle by promoting activity including walking circuits, bike trails and active play.

Tourism

Pelican Park is situated between Lakelands Caravan Park and the Tallangatta Foreshore Reserve all fronting Lake Hum. A key driver within the design is to transform the Tallangatta Foreshore into a destination for both tourists and locals alike.

Being that the site is positioned next to the caravan park, the opportunities to create activity and amenity in this area are vital. Whether people are visiting from Albury or Wodonga for a weekend getaway or from Canberra or Melbourne for a short stay, the design will offer something for everyone and draw on the character of the area to offer experiences unique to Tallangatta.

Experience

The main aim of the design is to create a variety of unique experiences that highlight and capture Tallangatta’s distinct character. The proximity to Lake Hume and connection to water can offer a range of experiences no matter the water level. Some experiences include:

  • Enjoying the sun going down over the lake;
  • Picnics by the lake;
  • Biking along the foreshore;
  • Connection to the lake;
  • Interacting with the water; and
  • Activities for all ages.

The key stages of the project included:

Stage 1 – Adventure Trail & Bespoke Playground
Stage 2 – Sunset Jetty, Shelter & Amphitheatre
Stage 3 – Community Hub & Carparking
Stage 4 – Adventure Trail

The project also included detailed costings for each Stage of the works and was delivered in partnership with Dunn Moran Landscape Architects, Paynters and DM2 Architecture.

The project is part of the Towong Shires ‘Tallangatta Tomorrow’ regional revitalisation strategy and compliments previous planning work done by Sustainable Parks Solutions at the Tallangatta Caravan Park.
